5 Steps to Achieving Your Dream Lifestyle Without Burning Yourself Out

By Dan Warburton

Is it possible to choose and create your dream lifestyle without killing yourself in the process? The answer is yes. In fact, the journey to the top can be quite fulfilling. Here are my five top insights on how to leave a legacy without burning yourself out.

1. Display clarity and conviction

First and foremost, you need to be clear about what it is that you want to be recognized for being good at. Then choose and commit to it with such clarity and conviction that everyone around you clearly recognizes you for doing that one thing.

The truth is you will only ever become successful when you move in one direction, and one direction only. This is because it takes a lot of energy to create your dream lifestyle via one avenue, let alone via two or three. Choose one business, one skill, or one service, and do whatever it takes to become super skilled at delivering that one thing and in a way that no one else does.

Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead is sometimes attributed as saying, “Don’t be the best in the world at what you do, be the only one in the world who does what you do.” And he’s right. This is how you’ll leave a legacy without burning yourself out.

Expressing your chosen commitment with clarity and conviction, and through your own unique divine self-expression will cause you to stand out. By doing this people will be interested in you, really want to work with you, and want to receive your services.

On the other hand, if you try to be recognized for a series of different jobs, you’ll end up spreading yourself in too many directions and not have the energy required to get any one of them off the ground, or built up to a level that will allow you to leave a legacy.

2. Reverse your diary

Most people use their diaries to schedule work commitments and other things that they need to do to succeed. I use my diary to primarily schedule in relaxation and downtime—whether it’s going for a walk, watching a movie, or attending one of my yoga classes. I also schedule when I’m going on holiday or want to do the things that I love to do that make me happy. My relaxation, my downtime, and my hobbies are my number-one priority in my diary. This way I know that no matter what else might happen during the day, these important times to relax are already scheduled.

Having quality time to relax and rejuvenate, also ensures that I don’t burn out. The skill, of course, is to honor these times of relaxation, no matter what; it takes continual practice. Even if I don’t enter all my relaxation times, I have a certain time of day that I will switch off and relax and do something that is not work.

3. Give on your own terms, not on the terms of others.

Organizational psychologist Adam Grant has written an absolutely amazing book called Give and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success. In his book, Grant compares the varying levels of success achieved by three kinds of people: givers, takers, and traders.

Comparing the people driven by each of these three kinds of behavior, he says the most successful are the givers. However, Grant’s findings also show that the most unsuccessful are also the givers. So what differentiates the givers who become successful with the givers who don’t? The difference is that the givers who become successful give on their own terms, not on the terms of the receiver.

So you could say to your next client, “I can give you ‘this’ service at ‘this’ time next week. Or possibly at ‘this’ time the week after.” Doing that will allow you to honor your diary, honor your time of relaxation, honor your precious downtime, and will still ensure you come across as committed and generous, which is the foundation of being of service to others.

4. Quit forcing outcomes, choose to have fun

The late entrepreneur and motivational speaker Jim Rohn once wrote, “Don’t give up when you fail. Imagine what legacies would have never existed if someone had given up. How many thriving businesses would have been shut down if they quit at their first failure?” I completely agree with this.

If you try to force outcomes, it’s going to leave you burned out. So how do we not fall into the trap of forcing outcomes? We simply choose to have fun! When I write and make videos I often “don’t feel like doing it” but I know that if I make my work fun, it becomes so much easier.

The great Gary Vaynerchuk, for instance, leads an online marketing company with over 70 staff members and is famous for working very long hours; he also absolutely loves what he does, and this makes him completely unstoppable. Vaynerchuk has built a multi-million dollar businesses by not only being very focused and working a lot of hours, but also by choosing to really enjoy his work and make it fun.

So make your work fun! Whether you’re doing filing or making sales calls, you can always choose for the job to be fun. Break the task down into challenges. Set exciting deadlines. Having fun is a choice and is not caused by circumstance. If you’re having fun with your work, you’ll end up doing better at your tasks too.

5. If you can’t find a way to enjoy it, then leave it

If you are in a job where you’re feeling miserable every day, you’re not inspired at all, and you’re working with people whom you don’t enjoy working with, then make a plan to leave.

Use any spare time you have to get your CV together, research other jobs or other opportunities, and start having conversations with others about what type of career to choose next. Simply communicating with others will help you to see new opportunities.

Somebody came to me last week for some transformational coaching. He was a very skilled IT technician, but he did not like his job at all. We sat together and I helped him to be honest with himself. He told me what he really, really wanted to do was car detailing—high-end car valeting, car body spraying, and fitting of high end accessories to sports cars. Since having this coaching session with me, he’s started writing a business plan, and within three months wants to leave his current job and run his new business from his garage at home. This could well be the beginning of him creating a business that could grow and grow, and will enable him to leave a legacy.

So again, if you can’t find a way to enjoy the job that you do, then do whatever it takes to leave that position and start a career or a job that you will enjoy. Even if it means that initially you won’t be earning as much money and you may be facing some tough times, I guarantee that if you do it, you’ll set yourself free. When you enjoy what you do, you’ll be good at it, and be even more likely to succeed and leave that inspirational legacy.

Steps to take

1. Write down the number one skill or service that you are going to commit yourself to delivering. Then write out what the next three very most important actions are that you are going to take to makie this a reality.

2. Enter in your diary the days and times you are going to relax each week; invite someone that you will not let down to share a relaxing event with you.

3. Do your best to make your current work commitments fun! Make a game out of the chores that bore you.

4. Next time someone asks you to do something, offer them the times you are free and don’t compromise on your own precious downtime. If this continues to create problems, then look at getting a new job that will work with your relaxation commitments or go set up your own business.

5. If you can’t find a way to enjoy your current career, find a way to leave it and go create a new opportunity.
